Bairrada Wine Museum opens exhibition “Sparkling Wine | Bairrada Motherland”

The Bairrada Wine Museum, in Anadia, has the new temporary exhibition “Espumante | Bairrada Terra-Mãe” open to the public, a tribute to the history, tradition and pioneering spirit that established the Bairrada region as a national and international reference in the production of sparkling wines. Promoted by the Municipality of Anadia, the exhibition offers a detailed and engaging journey through the origins of sparkling wine in Portugal, with a special focus on Bairrada and the historical figures who have driven this sector since the 19th century. Among the honorees are names such as José Luciano de Castro, Father António Alves Mariz, José Paulo Cancella, and Justino de Sampaio Alegre, whose personal objects, documents, and photographs help trace the genesis of this winemaking legacy. The exhibition also pays tribute to Engineer Tavares da Silva, considered the "Father of Portuguese Sparkling Wine," who directed the then Bairrada School of Viticulture and Pomology.
The exhibition brings together a rich and diverse collection: period photographs, original equipment and machinery, historic labels, antique bottles, diplomas and medals from national and international competitions, including the prestigious Gold Medals from the Universal Exhibition in Paris (1900) and St. Louis, USA (1904).
Exhibited art reveals an immersive experience Other highlights include artworks by José Malhoa and Fausto Sampaio, and contemporary installations by artists such as DoAmaral and Albano Martins, as well as a remarkable photographic collection of the region's grape harvests by Eduardo Agostinho and Artur Pastor. The experience culminates in an immersive room, where sparkling wine is celebrated through a sensorial and innovative approach. This project is the result of a broad network of partnerships that includes entities such as the CCDRC, the Bairrada Wine Commission, the Dionísio Pinheiro and Alice Cardoso Pinheiro Foundation, the Rota da Bairrada Association, the Confraria dos Enófilos da Bairrada, the José Luciano de Castro Museum, and the Monte Crasto Cellars, in addition to the families and descendants of the protagonists portrayed, to whom the Municipality publicly thanks for their valuable contribution.
The exhibition can be visited until December 31, from Tuesday to Sunday, between 10:00 am and 1:00 pm, and from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm, in the museum space.
